Kim Eaton, CI & CT, NAD IV Kim attended a high school near Sacramento, California that had a Deaf program and offered American Sign Language as an elective. Being intrigued with the language, she took two years of sign language and then continued her training at American River College. She completed the Interpreter Training Program in 1985 and received her Associate of Arts Degree from Sierra College in Rocklin, California. In 1994, she received her Level IV-Advanced Interpreter Certification from the National Association of the Deaf. In 1995, she received a Certificate of Interpretation and a Certificate of Transliteration from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. For ten years, Kim worked in a Deaf service agency as an Interpreter Coordinator, Billing Coordinator, and Staff Interpreter. She left the agency in 1993 to spend more time with her four sons and to pursue interpreting as an independent contractor.
With the goal of providing the highest quality sign language interpreting services, Kim founded Eaton Interpreting Services, Inc. in 1994. Eaton Interpreting Services, Inc. has evolved into a community-oriented agency offering interpreting services, information and referral, and assisting businesses with their legal compliance obligations. Eaton Interpreting Services became a Certified Small Business with the State of California in 2001 and became incorporated in 2003. Kim remains the President and oversees interpreting services to City, County, State, Federal, and private entities. She contracts with professional and skilled interpreters to ensure that diverse populations with unique and individual needs are being met. In 2005, Eaton Interpreting Services, Inc. provided over 28,000 hours of interpreting services and we were honored to receive the Outstanding Interpreting Service Award from the Sacramento Deaf Community during the Interpreters Appreciation Gala! Kim maintains an active involvement in the professional interpreting community. She served one term as Vice-President and two terms as Member-At-Large for the Sacramento Valley Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (SaVRID), an Affiliate Chapter of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. (RID). Kim is also an Organizational and Certified member of RID, SaVRID, and NorCRID. Kim's greatest pleasure of all is spending time with her husband, sons, and grandsons.
Claude Shirts, CI & CT, IC/TC Claude was born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, California. He first encountered American Sign Language (ASL) while attending San Francisco State University and eventually went on to study ASL and Interpreting at Ohlone College, California State University Sacramento and American River College. Claude worked as a relay operator and assistant interpreter coordinator at NorCal Center on Deafness in the early 1980’s. He became involved with Deaf Blind interpreting at the Enchanted Hills Deaf Blind Camp and with the Northern California Association of the Deaf Blind. He has also done educational interpreting for local colleges and universities.
In 1985, Claude moved to New York City and stayed for almost seventeen years. While in New York, he held staff interpreting positions with the New York Society for the Deaf, LaGuardia Community College Program for Deaf Adults, and the New York City Board of Education. He also held Staff Interpreter /Interpreter Coordinator positions with the Helen Keller National Center, New York University Center for Students with Disabilities, and Hands On Sign Interpreted Performances. In the Deaf Blind interpreting field, Claude was a Support Service Provider at six American Association of the Deaf Blind Conventions and was the Interpreter Coordinator for two New York / New Jersey Usher Syndrome Family Conferences. From 1987 – 2001, Claude was active in the theater world, interpreting for over sixty-five Broadway and Off-Broadway performances in New York City. Through his volunteer and staff positions with Hands On Sign Interpreted Performances, he co-coordinated interpreted performances for over 250 Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and developed the organization’s on-line cultural calendar of events and its website. In 1999, in memory of his partner James Tola, he established the Tola Program, which provides interpreted theater experiences for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. Claude served four years as the New York City Metro RID Treasurer and 3 years as Membership Chair. In 1990, he received NYC Metro RID's Outstanding Service Award and in 1992, he received New York University's Michelle Zinkovich Outstanding Service Award.
Since returning to California in the fall of 2001, Claude has worked primarily with Eaton Interpreting Services as a freelance interpreter. In 2003, he worked as a Video Interpreter for Hands On Video Relay Services, and most recently, has coordinated interpreters and developed the scheduling system for Eaton Interpreting Services, Inc
Kathy Stacey, CT Kathy has twenty-five years of experience working with the Deaf community in the greater Sacramento area. She worked at NorCal Center on Deafness for twelve years in a variety of positions. The awareness and knowledge she gained while at NorCal has proven to be invaluable, and she is grateful for having had the opportunity to work with many Deaf advocacy pioneers. Kathy has been the recipient of numerous commendations for her work, but the one she is particularly honored to have received is an award of Special Honors and Highest Commendation from Assemblyman Phillip Isenberg and Assemblyman Lloyd Connelly for her work in managing the NorCal Telecommunications Center, the first relay service in Northern California.
Along with community interpreting work, Kathy has wide-ranging experience in the post-secondary setting, working in undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate level programs. For four years, she was a staff interpreter at the University of California, Davis and recently retired from California State University, Sacramento where she was interpreter coordinator for four years and staff interpreter for more than nine years. During her employment at the University, she was an active member of the California State University Employees Union and held the position of Chapter Secretary-Treasurer for three years. Kathy completed the deaf studies program at American River College and has a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Sacramento. Kathy holds a Certificate of Transliteration from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. She was one of the pilot participants in the mentorship training project sponsored by the California State University, Northridge Regional Outreach Program. She has been a member of SaVRID since 1982 and served on the SaVRID Board of Directors as President, Past-President, Secretary, and three terms as Member-at-Large. She currently does freelance community interpreting and coordinating for Eaton Interpreting Services, Inc. Cathy Bowers, CI & IC/TC
Cathy was born and raised outside of Baltimore, Maryland. She began taking sign language classes during her freshman year at Anne Arundel Community College. She became fascinated with the language and continued her sign classes at Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina. Cathy spent an internship at the Central North Carolina School for the Deaf in Greensboro and spent her senior year at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Cathy and her husband moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she taught at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf for two years. In 1980, Cathy moved to Clearwater, Florida where she and her family lived for the next 15 years. She worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf for two and a half years. She also began doing some community and educational interpreting. She attended two summer intensive interpreter training programs sponsored by Flagler College held at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. In 1986, Cathy received her IC/TC from RID. In addition to interpreting, Cathy worked as a professional tutor for Deaf students at Saint Petersburg College. The winds of change blew strong in 1996. That is when Cathy and her family moved 3000 miles across the country to the Sacramento area. While in California, Cathy worked for nine and a half years as a staff interpreter at California State University, Sacramento. She also enjoyed doing freelance interpreting and becoming involved with SaVRID. In 1999, she received her Certificate of Transliteration from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Although the California friendships she made were priceless, Cathy missed her family that was still on the East Coast. In November of 2005, Cathy and her husband moved 3000 miles back across the country and settled in Columbia, South Carolina. Since the move, she has been trying to get involved with the local RID chapter and has been busy practicing her southern drawl. Cathy is excited to be coordinating with Eaton Interpreting Services, Inc., because it means she can stay in contact with the California interpreters who touched her life so deeply.
Denise Garrido Guerrero, CI & CT, NAD IV
Denise was born in Madrid, Spain and raised most of her life in Europe. Growing up in several different countries such as England, Turkey, Germany, and Spain was a wonderful experience and one she deeply values! In 1982 while attending Fresno State University, she started taking sign language classes. Denise started working in the Deaf community as a volunteer relay operator at NorCal Center on Deafness during the mid 1980s. In addition to varied freelance interpreting assignments and working as an Interpreter Coordinator over the years, her focus has been on corporate and post secondary interpreting. She has held interpreter staff positions at Sprint California Relay, Massachusetts Relay, NorCal Center on Deafness, California State University, Sacramento, California Public Employees Retirement System, and American River College. Denise holds her AA in Sign Language Studies and has her community college teaching credential from CSUS (master level classes). She plans to continue taking a handful of classes to complete her BA degree. Denise currently divides her busy schedule between coordinating interpreters for EIS, interpreting in the community, and teaching in the Interpreter Training Program of American River College. Denise teaches interpreting in the post secondary education setting, deaf-blind interpreting, oral transmission and work experience. In addition to her busy work schedule, Denise works as a volunteer mentor with new interpreters. It is her way of giving back to the community. Denise has also given back to the community by doing work for the local RID chapter (SaVRID) in the past as both member-at-large and newsletter editor.
Kathy Miraglio
Kathy was born and raised in the Bay Area. She attended Heald Business College to learn the fiscal side of running a business. She began her bookkeeping career with a property management company where she was employed for nine years. When her family moved to the foothills, she focused on raising her three sons while working as a bookkeeper/office manager for the local hardware store. In October 2000, Kathy and her sons moved to the Sacramento area where she worked with a CPA and a wine broker. In January 2006, she started working part time for Eaton Interpreting Services as the bookkeeper, and in October 2006, she transitioned to full time. Her duties include billing, invoicing, payments, taxes, and ensuring that the accounting and bookkeeping aspects of EIS runs smoothly. |
